First-hand account from a ‘Perfect Gentleman’

Spiro arrives at Amani Rosebank Spa

I would not regard myself as a metrosexual male. Slapping a bit of no-name-brand moisturiser on my face in the morning is pretty much the extent of my self-indulgence. The reality is that I am more of a ‘guys’ guy’, and have left the task of skin, nail and body care to those chaps in my wolf pack who are more in touch with their feminine side.

So when my ‘wifey’ got me a voucher for a “Perfect Gentleman” treatment comprising of a Back, neck and shoulder massage and Express BABOR Men’s facial at Amani Spa as an early Father’s Day present, I admit to feeling lukewarm about the whole idea. Naturally I could not show this, and accepted my treat with feigned enthusiasm.

As it was a busy sporting day (including the Formula 1, the French Open Men’s Final, and the ICC), my appointment was set for 10am at Amani Spa in Rosebank.

I arrived at the Rosebank Crowne Plaza – an awesome hotel, I’ve been there before for drinks at the trendy Circle Bar – and was greeted by the very big smile of super-friendly Thuli. After completing a simple consultation form, I was handed a locker key and instructed to change out of my clothes (thankfully I did not need to part with my jocks) into a dressing gown and slippers. I was taken to the tranquil rest area, where I relaxed on a recliner for about five minutes before my therapist Zodwa came to fetch me.

The room that had been booked for my massage was a really cool colour, infused with lilac ambient lighting. The ambiance was enhanced by one of my favourite soundtracks, The Big Blue. I was told to lie on my stomach and covered in a towel, and Zodwa proceeded with my back massage. I have got to say, it was absolutely incredible. She has a very firm hand, and got right into all the knots on my back. By the end of the massage she was using her forearms to work along the length of my lumbar muscles. This lady may be small, but she certainly packs a punch with a set of very powerful hands. I felt like I had died and gone to heaven, and it was over all too soon.

The facial commences

I was then instructed to turn around onto my back so that we could begin what was to be my first ever facial. Zodwa applied a series of liquids and potions to my face, and patiently explained to me what she was doing every step of the way. To be honest, she could have been painting me purple. I didn’t care. Her hands on my face felt great. Exfoliating, cleansing, toning and moisturising.

A facial massage…pure bliss!

The warm cloth…like sorbet between courses of a fine dining experience!

This was more of a face massage, and not the “airy fairy girly thing” that I had anticipated. What I loved was the warm cloth used between each phase of the treatment – kind of like a sorbet between courses. My face has seldom been given this much attention – it’s usually at the receiving end of a razor blade and a slap of aftershave – and I felt completely invigorated when the 30-minute treatment came to an end.

Feeling like a new man!

A mere 60 minutes later, I can truly say I felt like a new man. I was fresh and ready to hit my sporting day ahead.

Ready for an afternoon of serious spectator sport!

Although I arrived as a true ‘macho’ skeptic, I left with a new understanding of what the fuss is all about. This is not for sissies, but is for anyone who can appreciate the power of touch, and taking a little down time in a really awesome setting. I had an amazing first-ever spa experience at Amani.

If this is what being a metrosexual is all about, where do I sign up?

He-waxing – Hair removal for Men

The “metrosexual” era left via the back door some time ago, but “he-waxing” seems to be here to stay. More and more men are baring their hairless bods at the pool, the beach, and next to the cricket pitch. Men have embraced “hair-free”, and found they loved it!

This blog is for those of you thinking about navigating the waters of hair removal. Maybe you find your hairy back a little too “Neanderthal”, your chest a little too “Tom Jones”, or you want to shave seconds off your cycling or swimming time by making your legs a little more “aerodynamic”. Perhaps – like many women – you just dislike body hair. Whatever your motive, waxing isn’t as scary a prospect as your imagination would have you believe.

Why Wax?

Waxing is one of the longest-lasting temporary hair-removal techniques available. Hair takes 3-6 weeks to grow back.

Waxing really does make your hair grow back lighter over time. Because the wax gets into the hair follicle and pulls the hair from the root, it grows back less thick than when the shaft is shaved.

Does it hurt?

We won’t beat about the bush here – pun intended! Waxing is uncomfortable – especially the first time you have it done, and for those with very sensitive skin. But many report that it seems to hurt less the more accustomed you get to the procedure. And, relax! Like most things, waxing seems to be more painful the more tense you are.

Side Effects of Waxing

We’d like to say that once the hair has been removed you’ll be “waxing lyrical” and that there are no potential nasty side effects. Unfortunately, since men’s hair tends to be thick and it’s removed against the grain when it’s waxed, there is a chance you may get bumps, ingrown hairs or even pimples.

Another drawback is that the hair needs to be at least 1cm long before it can be waxed again. The wait (up to 6 weeks) can be a bit frustrating, especially if you have a serious date at the beach.

Ingrown Hairs

The most common and annoying side effect of waxing is that the hair may start growing back into the skin – aka ingrown hairs. The best way to avoid this is to regularly exfoliate both before and after waxing. Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, allowing a better and easier wax, and keeping the follicle open to allow the hair to grow out.

Amani offers the following waxing options for men:

  • Full, or half back
  • Full, three-quarter or half leg
  • Full or half arm
  • Underarm
  • Chest

Here’s to a smoother you!
